INTRODUCTION

Cardiac surgery for correction and treatment of congenital heart disease, developed and improved, especially from the second half of this century [1,2] are in prospect of survival for children with these diseases. We all acknowledge that, the pediatric cardiac surgeon has great ability and skills to manipulate extremely small structures.

Thus, the intraoperative period is a moment of great importance for the surgery success and the conduct of the team that receives the child during the postoperative period influences the immediate results of surgical procedures [3]. It is important to emphasize, in this context, the role of the nursing staff in the postoperative period, which will be with the patient continuously during the subsequent hours, being responsible for the preparation of the patient's unit, providing human and material resources, receiving the child and also the hemodynamics controls.

Taking into consideration theses aspects, the nursing staff training is a constant concern of the leaders, technicians and nursing assistants who work directly on child care in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. To this purpose, the Nursing Coodination of the Clinical Hospital Heart Institute at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School (InCor-FMUSP) developed a multimedia material for training their staff.

MULTIMEDIA MATERIAL

Educational film was used in order to describe the procedures of the nursing staff to receive the child during the postoperative period of cardiac surgery (http://www.rbccv.org.br/video/v26n2/).

The communication among the nurses in the operating room is emphasized and intensive care unit (ICU) in relation to relevant information in the intraoperative period.

Then, it points out the important role of the ICU nurse who, with the information already received, starts the planning of nursing care to be provided with the choice of equipment best suited to that child and the definition of professional nursing who will be responsible for the child.

It is worth emphasizing that the process of decision making, considering both assistance and managerial aspects to meet the individual needs of each child is based on the Nursing Care System - NCS.
