Mission of the Journal

BJCVS is intended to publish representative studies on cardiovascular surgery, including original and pioneers articles, updates, case reports and also studies presented at the National Congress of Cardiac Surgery. Thus, BJCVS has an important role in the dissemination of clinical experience and research results from Services of Cardiovascular Surgery in Brazil and abroad.

Profile of the Journal and Editorial Policy

The Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery (BJCVS), founded in 1986 and published continuously since then, is the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, which represents approximately 1000 cardiac surgeons in the country. It is a quarterly publication, with an average of 560 pages and 80 articles per year (ISSN print edition 0102-7638).

The Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery has adopted the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, organized by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

The Editorial Board is composed of experts from national and international reputation, with regular scientific production at BJCVS and international journals. Many of these reviewers compose the Editorial Board of international journals of prominent and recognized arbitration. Most members of the editorial board maintain links with universities from various States of Brazil, on which 84% of them were PhD and/or Full Professors.

Prior to publication, all articles undergo a rigorous process of review and arbitration as a means to ensure their standard of quality and neutrality in the selection of studies published. All studies submitted to the Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery are submitted to peer review for at least three reviewers selected from among the associate editors or editorial board members. Reviewers answer a questionnaire, on which they make a rigorous examination of all the items that compose the study, grading each of the items of the questionnaire. At the end, general comments about the study are made and the reviewer opines on the publication or not of the study, as well as the need for further review. Using these data, the editor makes the final decision. In case of discrepancies between the reviewers, it can be ordered a new opinion for a better judgement. When changes are suggested by the reviewers, such changes are forwarded to the author and then to the reviewers to verify the new version. The entire process is performed electronically, and in each phase strict deadlines are required. In case of delay, a new reviewer is chosen, the same occurring in case of denial of reviewing a study. When the subject of the manuscript so requires, the editor requires the support of an ad hoc reviewer, who is not part of the Editorial Board, for evaluation.

For some years now, the whole process of submission and review is performed by a bilingual on-line management system for submission of articles (SGP). Thus, in consonance with the major scientific journals published worldwide, it is available on the website of the electronic version of BJCVS (www.rbccv.org.br), the on-line system for submission of articles, covering all the editorial processes of scientific publication, since submission and review until final publication. The system provides hierarchical access of password for authors, secretariat, reviewers, editor, associate editors, spelling reviewers, visual designers and translators. The system is safe, fast and efficient. Thus, the authors can more easily send their articles, the review process is very efficient and, consequently, the publication is faster. The entire review process is double blind and at the end of the process a certificate is provided to reviewers.

In the publishing norms of BJCVS there are clear instructions relating to obedience to the ethical behavior of research involving humans and animals, as well as the project approval by the Research Ethics Committees.

All articles must come, necessarily, accompanied by a Submission Letter, explaining the presence or absence of conflict of interest and lack of related ethical problem. In that letter, the authors should state that the manuscript has not been published or is being reviewed by another journal.

In the electronic submission of manuscripts, the system automatically generates an assignment of copyright, which is signed by all authors and then sent by mail.

Articles are not consulted by cardiovascular surgeons only, but also by graduate and post-graduate students, as well as members of multidisciplinary teams (physiotherapists, nurses, psychologists, biologists, pharmacists, among others).

The printed version of BJCVS is still published in Portuguese, however, since 2003, it is also available on the Internet in English version, a decision maked aiming to increase the visibility in the international scientific community (ISSN online edition 1678-9741). The abstract of the articles is presented in two languages, Portuguese and English, both structured. Likewise, the instructions to authors are also presented in both languages.

Uniqueness of the Journal

The Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery (BJCVS) is the only journal of cardiac surgery published regularly in Brazil. It represents an important vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge not only for surgeons, but also South Americans who have no regular journals and of recognized arbitration in their countries in this area.

Brazil is the second largest country in number of cardiac surgeries in the world, showing our potential and our scientific capacity. In addition, there are 150 hospitals accredited by the Ministry of Health to perform cardiac surgeries. In our country, there are three industries that produce equipment for cardiac surgery, the only ones from southern hemisphere. There is a close relationship between industry, research and development, mainly through interaction with the University, so that there are qualified personnel, development of basic science and technological innovation.

The Brazilian cardiac surgeons, for several years, have published articles of excellent scientific level, many of them approaching technical innovation within the specialty and which are considered reference worldwide.

Flow of Articles

Articles are submitted in continuous flow. The dates of receipt and approval of the manuscript are listed at the bottom of the first page of each article.

The rejection rate in the years 2007 and 2008 was 22% and 29.5%, respectively.

Progressively, we have been seeking to reduce the interval between the submission and approval of the article, as well as between the approval and publication. For this, in recent years it has been expanded the number of pages of editions. We also intend to perform changes in the journal's periodicity from quarterly to bimonthly.

In the journal's website, we also have available the articles already approved and awaiting publication in future editions.

Indexers

Earlier this year, BJCVS was accepted for indexing by Thomson Scientific (ISI), after several months of waiting.

In 2007, BJCVS was indexed in Medline. Since its creation, it is indexed in LILACS - Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences. Also, it is indexed in SCOPUS, LATINDEX, Google Scholar and Index Copernicus.

It also incorporates the collection of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) since 1997 (www.scielo.br/rbccv).

Goals

Our goal for the next issues is to increase the number of articles, mostly originals, and alter the journal's periodicity to bimonthly and gradually increase its impact factor.

One of the goals for the coming period is to improve and expand the Program for Continuing Medical Education (CME) recently introduced. CME is an initiative to enable readers interested in improving their knowledge and scoring of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery associates who answer correctly tests based on articles published in BJCVS. Finally, credits are provided, which would incorporate the assessment of members of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery for revalidation of the Title of Specialist.

In addition, we intend to progressively expand the number of articles that could add new media such as images of surgical procedures described in the article from that edition, which can be accessed on the Internet.

Forms of access and links to online Journal

Since 1997, our journal is available on the Internet (www.scielo.br), part of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO).

In the official website of the journal (www.rbccv.org.br), all the issues printed since 1997 are available in full version.

Considering the number of hits through the website of the journal and SciELO, currently, we recorded about 3000 hits per day.

Another step toward the internationalization of BJCVS was the inclusion of a link of SciELO website on the American website = http://www.ctsnet.org in "organization sites" "Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery", under the heading "Journals". This site brings together the leading publications in the field of cardiothoracic surgery in the world.
