Good news at the end of the year

In November, the Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery (RBSCV/BJCVS) received two pieces of good news which I would like to share with you. The first one is that, once again, we were awarded editorial assistance by CNPq. The amount has not been defined yet, nor when the money will be released, but it will surely not take a long time. The other good news is that "Index Copernicus", a European Database of growing importance, reassessed our journal and increased its rating with confirmation of this being published at the start of the New Year. It is a small change but shows that we are on the right track. We achieved high assessments in "Editorial Quality", "Circulation/accessibility" and "Technical Quality/ Production Values", as well as having zero points for the "Negative Score" assessment, which reflects punctuality and correct insertion of advertisements amongst other items. Our lowest score related to "Scientific Quality", does not reflect the quality of the articles published, but is because we are not indexed to databases such as Pubmed and ISI.

Again it is clear that the BJCVS is not very different from international scientific journals. We made, in this volume, small adaptations to include print/editorial adjustments, such as publishing the e-mail addresses of the Editor, Executive Editor and Editorial Assistant, as well as including the number of copies printed.

As I have insisted since I took over as Editor of the journal, the main goal is to be indexed in Medline, but this does not only depend on our desire alone and we are trying to improve the journal with online Portuguese and English editions, the publication of works by foreign authors (in this volume there is an original article and a case report, in pages 429 e 472, respectively) and submission and review of works directly on the internet site. With authorization of the directorate, we paid the annual charge of CTSnet for all members of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and so we are now all registered. The BJCVS link in CTSnet now redirects directly to the specific site of the BJCVS and is quicker and more up-to-date than that of Scielo.

However, we still have the collaboration of Bireme and Scielo that, with their serious and hard work, give essential support to the consolidation of scientific publications in Brazil with the creation of a new portal. Scielo recently submitted a few journals including the BJCVS to ISI. Unfortunately the results were not what we hoped for, however the scientific coordinator of the institution, Prof. Rogério Meneghini intends to go to Philadelphia to take just our journal to ISI and to insist in its indexation to the database.

Another important aspect in respect to our acceptance internationally which will also increase our chances of indexation is the inclusion of more foreign specialists in the Editorial Committee. Our most recent participant is Dr. Alan Menkis, Medical Director and Professor of heart surgery at St. Boniface General Hospital, Winnipeg, Canada. In the "Letters to the Editor" section, in pages 483 and 484, there is my correspondence and a letter from him thanking me for the invitation and accepting it.

The BJCVS is also present in "Google Scholar", which is currently an important database due to its coverage. To access the journal enter: http://scholar.google.com.br/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=%22

In this edition, we have published three editorials on very interesting current themes in cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Gilberto Barbosa, Coordinator of the Residence Commission on Teaching and Training of the BSCVS, presents a series of arguments aiming at changing medical residence, with the objective of adequately preparing future cardiovascular surgeons so that they are more capable of fulfilling the expectations of the society. Drs. Walter Gomes and Enio Buffolo discuss the effects of performing coronary artery bypass grafting after stent implantation by percutaneous coronary intervention by an analysis of recent studies on the matter. Finally, in page IX, I also broach the superiority of coronary artery bypass grafting surgery over stents. The journal is open to discuss these matters further.

I would like to take this opportunity, to again thank the reviewers for their indispensable work, which is not always recognized as it should be. As we did in 2005, we are publishing in page 486 the list of all reviewers who gave their precious time to collaborate with the BJCVS by giving precise evaluations that, as always, contributes to maintaining the quality of the journal high. From 2007 we are going to provide to everyone who completes a review a certificate that will serve as proof of their work.

We again request that reviewers and authors rigorously stick to deadlines when they evaluate and correct works. If a reviewer does not feel he is able to evaluate a manuscript due to lack of time or any other reason whatsoever, we request that he informs us as soon as he receives the request, in order that we can send the work to another person.

Similarly, authors should verify their e-mails as frequently as possible because when the review is finished, the system sends a message that the evaluation of the work is completed and it is available for correction on the site. After that it is only necessary to access the site www.rbccv.org.br, using the author's login and password. To improve the processing of manuscripts, from 2007 on the system will automatically delete reviewed articles that have been returned by authors if a corrected version is not received within 12 weeks. This may seem a little drastic, but only in this manner will we be able to curb delays that, frequently, prejudice the preparation of the journal. Also we would like to remind you that every time you change your e-mail address, your details on the site should be up-dated so that you continue to receive your massages. We hope that we can count on you all in respect to this and please do not hesitate to enter in contact if you have any doubts.

In 2007 we will also implant the online Continuing Medical Education in Cardiovascular Surgery. In all issues articles will be highlighted. People interested in answering questions on these articles should access and complete a test. On achieving a predetermined number of points a digital certificate will be provided which will count towards revalidation of the specialist title. This initiative is the first in Brazil.

At the end of another year I wish to congratulate, not only the authors and reviewers, but all those who made the publication of the BJCVS possible.

My special thanks to the directorate, associated members and employees of the BSCVS for their essential support and to the advertisers for their continuing trust.

I am sure that the journal will continue its effort to widen its international access with our never ending desire to improve it.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and 2007 full of success!
